History of Illinois State University's
Red Tassel Chapter of Mortar Board
"I shall not pass this way again.
Any good thing that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show,
let me do it now.
Let me not defer it or neglect it,
for I may not pass this way again."
--Emily Dickinson
These words by Emily Dickinson reflect the intentions and determination of
the founding members of Red Tassel. In 1968, a group of senior women and
advisors formed a senior women's service honor society. In establishing Red
Tassel, this distinguished group of women sought to make a difference for
themselves and the university. Red Tassel was accepted as a national affiliate
of Mortar Board in December of 1975, and was installed as a new chapter in April
of 1976. Complying with Title IX of the Higher Education Act and recognizing the
value of a co-educational organization, the Red Tassel chapter of 1976-77 was
among the first Mortar Board chapters to include men.
Red Tassel activities traditionally have included such projects as hosting
receptions given by the president, ushering at commencement, hosting for
parent's day, serving as ambassadors of Illinois State to high schools around
the state, serving community and social service agencies, and raising funds to
finance chapter projects. In more recent years, different activities reflect the
changing interests of the members. Examples of the activities include
jog-a-thons, benefit activities for muscular dystrophy, planting a tree on the
university quad to celebrate the anniversary of the US constitution, "Clean Up
Normal" weekends, and annual receptions honoring faculty members important in
the lives of Red Tassel members.
Each year, Red Tassel adopts a special project aiming to improve the
university. Many of these projects have been extremely successful and their
benefits are still realized today. Here are some examples of senior projects:
-In 1978, the Red Tassel Chapter implemented the women's transit
authority (WTA) as their chapter's continuing service project for the
university community. This escort service for women who otherwise would have
to walk alone at night provided a safe and economical transportation
alternative. The service was extended to men in the Spring of 1993 and was
renamed Safe Ride. ISU's current stand alone Nite Ride Bus Transportation
Program evolved from the groundwork laid by the Red Tassel chapter.
-Members of the 1997 Red Tassel chapter, felt it was time to do something
big again--something that would reflect all three standards of Mortar Board.
In addition to supporting service organizations, two major projects were
pursued. In 1997-98, the first leadership conference for McLean county high
school students was organized. The all-day conference included a panel
discussion of ISU student leaders, speakers such as Illinois Senator John
Maitland, and challenging group activities. The goal was to help these
students advance in becoming successful leaders. The second project involved
visiting undergraduate classes at ISU to stress the importance of being a
leader and getting involved in college organizations and community service
activities.
Future members of Red Tassel Mortar Board will continue to be challenged to
keep the tradition of excellence and leadership alive.
